Rosacea Treatment

Rosacea Treatment

Rosacea is a condition of the skin which means that the face, neck and even chest can flush, to the extent that it can look as red as sunburn, or in many cases, blushing.

It is actually caused by enlarged blood vessels, and can be set-off by many things that could include, for example, chemicals, alcohol or even just temperature fluctuation.

Rosacea is one of the more common skin concerns. It can be frustrating because it often flares up unpredictably and requires specific treatments. Rosacea is characterised by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, bumps, and sometimes thickened skin, especially around the nose. Let’s dive into key aspects of managing rosacea and what’s important for skincare.

1. Understanding Rosacea Triggers

Rosacea can be exacerbated by environmental factors like sun exposure, spicy foods, stress, alcohol and inflammatory foods such as sugar, gluten, dairy etc, Identifying your personal triggers is crucial to minimising flare-ups. Keeping a skincare diary can help spot patterns and avoid what worsens your condition.

2. Gentle Skincare Routine

Since rosacea-prone skin is often sensitive, harsh ingredients or aggressive treatments can worsen it. Here’s a rosacea-friendly routine:

Cleanser: Opt for a fragrance-free, non-foaming, and hydrating cleanser. Avoid ingredients like alcohol or sulfates that strip the skin’s natural oils. Our Oil cleanser is particularly good for this skin condition as it contains no harsh ingredients

Moisturiser: Hydration is key because dry skin can worsen redness. Choose moisturisers with ceramides, glycerin, fatty acids. And healing ingredients such as our miracle healing cream, with its naturally soothing, healing, anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness.

Sun Protection: UV rays are a big trigger for rosacea, so a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is non-negotiable. Physical sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are generally gentler and less irritating than chemical sunscreens.

3. Some additional help

Skincare for rosacea needs to focus on soothing and calming the skin, as well as reducing inflammation and redness. Here are a few ingredients that can be beneficial:

Azelaic Acid: This is a powerhouse for rosacea because it helps reduce redness, inflammation, and the appearance of bumps and pimples. It can also improve skin texture and is safe for long-term use.

Niacinamide: A form of Vitamin B3, it’s great for reducing inflammation, strengthening the skin barrier, and decreasing redness over time..

Centella Asiatica (Cica): This plant extract is renowned for its ability to heal and calm the skin, making it a rosacea-friendly ingredient.

4. Professional Treatments

For more severe cases of rosacea, dermatologists may recommend prescription treatments:

Topical Treatments: Metronidazole, ivermectin, and brimonidine gel are commonly prescribed. These target inflammation, bacteria, and reduce visible redness.

Oral Medications: Low-dose antibiotics like doxycycline can help with inflammation, while isotretinoin may be used in more severe cases.

Laser Treatments: Vascular lasers like IPL (intense pulsed light) or PDL (pulsed dye laser) can target broken blood vessels and reduce persistent redness.

5. Lifestyle Changes to Support Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic condition, so lifestyle tweaks can go a long way:

Dietary Adjustments: Foods that are spicy, high in histamines, or alcoholic beverages are common rosacea triggers. Consider a more anti-inflammatory diet with omega-3 rich foods (like salmon and flaxseed), which can help calm skin.

Stress Management: Since stress can cause flare-ups, incorporating stress-relieving techniques like meditation, yoga, or even regular sleep can help minimize rosacea symptoms.

Rosacea sufferers can, understandably, suffer from self-esteem issues and in some cases, may suffer from depression that results in them not want to go out in public in case they experience an outbreak.

At Laser Skin Clinics Wolverhampton, we are experts in treating Rosacea with our high-tech laser treatment that is fast and permanent and also, non-invasive.

Rosacea treatment initial consultation

During your initial consultation, your friendly skin expert will give you all the answers for questions that you may have about the treatment.

You will be recommended for a treatment programme that is tailor-made to combat your problem and if you decide to go ahead, you will be given a skin patch test either during your consultation period or by appointment.

Your treatment session will then be booked in at your convenience.

Rosacea treatment process

When you arrive for your treatment, a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area and you will be given protective goggles and made very comfortable.

The sapphire crystal light pulses will be applied to the area and although the feeling may be slightly uncomfortable, most people tell us that it is bearable.

Treatments do not take long, depending on the size of area, but each time you come you will see an improvement – usually after just two sessions you will notice a difference.

The sessions usually take place every four weeks.

Laser Skin Clinics Wolverhampton use the FDA Approved advanced Intense Pulsed Light system, which is a cutting-edge technology that makes use of a sapphire crystal.

This crystal’s wavelength applies a broad-spectrum of light to the surface of the skin – through the epidermis and dermis – and then, when it hits the target area, it destroys the vascular lesions by absorption of the light by the haemoglobin.

This is because when the temperature reaches around 60-70C, the blood coagulates, the inner cells of the blood vessels denature and the vein vessels dissolve. The heat from the process helps boost the production of collagen and thus helps the healing process and stimulates repair of the skin.

After the treatment, don’t be alarmed if the treatment area is red, pink or swollen – this is a temporary effect of the treatment and will usually last no longer than 24-48 hours.
